1. Overview of Veigar

Veigar is a high-damage AP burst mage who specializes in crowd control and massive late-game damage through his Phenomenal Evil Power passive, allowing him to scale infinitely. His cage (Event Horizon) and ultimate (Primordial Burst) make him a threat in team fights, especially against squishier targets.

2. Abilities

  • Passive – Phenomenal Evil Power: Veigar gains stacks of AP with each ability hit on an enemy champion, as well as for each large minion, siege minion, or large monster he kills. This makes Veigar a scaling monster if he can farm and poke consistently.
  • Q – Baleful Strike: This is Veigar’s primary farming and poking tool. Each time he kills a minion or champion with it, he gains stacks of AP. Baleful Strike can hit two targets, so aim to hit both a minion and the enemy champion in trades.
  • W – Dark Matter: A delayed AoE nuke that deals massive damage. It scales with AP and has a relatively low cooldown. Use it alongside Event Horizon to keep targets in place, ensuring it lands.
  • E – Event Horizon: Veigar’s cage ability is one of his strongest tools. It stuns enemies who touch its walls, creating zoning pressure in fights and setting up kills. Proper placement of Event Horizon is key to landing combos and avoiding ganks.
  • R – Primordial Burst: A single-target, high-damage nuke that scales with Veigar’s AP and the target’s missing health. It’s ideal for executing low-health enemies or squishy carries. Look to use it on high-value targets in fights.

3. Combos

  • Basic Combo: E (cage) > W > Q > R. This is Veigar’s main burst combo, ensuring the enemy is stunned for the full duration to maximize damage.
  • Trade Combo: Q > W, use this to poke the enemy down in lane and build up stacks.
  • All-In Combo: E > Q > W > R, to maximize burst damage when you’re confident of a kill.
Placing your Event Horizon well is essential to securing your damage and trapping enemies for your full combo.

4. Build Path

  • Core Items:
    • Luden's Tempest or Everfrost: Luden’s provides great poke and burst potential, while Everfrost gives Veigar additional crowd control, making it harder for enemies to escape his combos.
    • Rabadon's Deathcap: Essential for amplifying Veigar’s AP and his scaling potential.
    • Zhonya's Hourglass: Offers survivability and can be a game-changer when positioning in fights is tricky.
  • Situational Items:
    • Void Staff: When enemies start stacking magic resist.
    • Banshee’s Veil: Provides a spell shield and helps against enemy mages or crowd control.
    • Horizon Focus: Pairs well with Event Horizon to boost damage on stunned targets.

5. Runes

  • Primary (Sorcery):
    • Arcane Comet: Great for poke and dealing extra damage when you hit with Event Horizon and Dark Matter.
    • Manaflow Band: Helps with mana sustain in the laning phase.
    • Transcendence: Grants ability haste and lets you cast spells more frequently.
    • Gathering Storm: This boosts your late-game power, synergizing with Veigar’s scaling.
  • Secondary (Inspiration):
    • Biscuit Delivery: Provides sustain in the early game and helps with mana.
    • Cosmic Insight: Reduces cooldown on your abilities and Flash, making Veigar’s stun and ultimate more available.

6. Laning Phase Tips

  • Farm Safely with Q: Stack AP by last-hitting minions with Baleful Strike. Focus on hitting both minions and poking champions when safe.
  • Poke and Zone with E: Use Event Horizon to zone out the enemy mid-laner. Be careful not to overextend, as it has a cooldown, leaving you vulnerable to ganks.
  • Avoid Unnecessary Fights Early: Veigar is relatively weak early, so focus on farming and stacking AP. Once you have your ultimate and a few levels, you can look for kill opportunities.

7. Mid to Late-Game Tactics

  • Positioning: Veigar is immobile, so positioning is critical. Stay at the back of your team, using Event Horizon to protect yourself and zone enemies.
  • Use E for Zoning in Team Fights: Placing Event Horizon well in team fights is key. Use it to isolate targets or zone off parts of the battlefield, making it harder for the enemy team to engage or disengage.
  • Target Priority: Look for squishy, high-priority targets to use Primordial Burst on, as your ultimate can easily take down carries if they’re low. However, use your crowd control and poke to soften them up first.

8. Matchups

  • Good Against: Champions who rely on skill shots and lack mobility (e.g., Xerath, Ziggs) are generally easier for Veigar to handle because he can trap them with Event Horizon.
  • Struggles Against: Assassins with high mobility like Zed, Talon, or Fizz can be tough matchups, as they can quickly bypass Event Horizon and burst Veigar down. Play safer and use Zhonya’s Hourglass to avoid their all-ins.
Mastering Veigar is about timing, positioning, and maximizing his infinite scaling. Keep stacking, land those cages, and unleash devastating late-game bursts!
