Key Wave Control Techniques
1. Last-Hitting
Last-hitting is the foundation of wave control. It involves only attacking minions when they're low enough for a single basic attack to kill them. This prevents pushing the wave too quickly and gives you control over where the wave is positioned.
2. Freezing
Freezing is the act of maintaining the wave in a favorable spot without letting it push toward the enemy tower. This gives you safety, denies the enemy farm, and creates opportunities for ganks. To maintain a freeze:
- Goal: Keep 3-4 enemy minions more than your wave to prevent it from pushing.
- How to do it: Last-hit enemy minions as late as possible. Avoid using AoE abilities that can damage multiple minions or push the wave.
- When to freeze:
- If you’re behind, freezing near your turret can keep you safe while farming.
- If the enemy laner needs to roam, you can freeze to make them lose CS while they're gone.
- Against a stronger lane opponent, freezing can prevent aggressive trades by forcing them to overextend.
3. Slow Push
A
slow push is when you let a wave build up by last-hitting minions and adding more of your minions to the next wave. Over time, the wave will naturally accumulate more minions, creating a large wave that pushes toward the enemy turret.
- How to do it: Kill only the enemy caster minions (or none at all) while letting your wave kill the rest. This makes your minion wave build up naturally.
- When to slow push:
- If you want to create a big wave to crash into the enemy tower, forcing them to miss CS or respond.
- Before recalling or roaming, slow pushing gives you time to leave the lane while the enemy is busy clearing a massive wave.
- It can help set up a dive, as the large wave crashes under the enemy tower, giving your team more opportunities to attack.
4. Fast Push / Shoving
Fast pushing or
shoving involves clearing the wave as quickly as possible. This is done by using AoE abilities or auto-attacking frequently to push the wave toward the enemy turret rapidly.
- How to do it: Use your abilities or attack the minions constantly to clear the wave.
- When to fast push:
- To reset the wave so you can recall without losing CS.
- To deny the enemy laner farm if they’re out of lane or low on health.
- To create pressure if you want to roam or join a skirmish.
- After killing the enemy laner, fast push the wave to make them lose experience and gold under the turret.
5. Wave Reset
A
wave reset occurs when the wave is in the middle of the lane, neutral and even for both sides. This can happen when both waves meet and have an equal number of minions on each side. Resetting the wave is useful when you want to go back to a neutral state after pushing or freezing.
- How to reset the wave: Kill the minions equally on both sides or thin out excess minions if one side has more.
- When to reset:
- Before recalling or if you want to disengage without putting the wave in a bad position.
- After a gank to bring the wave back to a neutral spot.
3. Advanced Concepts in Wave Management
1. Bounce Back
The
bounce back strategy happens when you hard shove the wave into the enemy turret, and after the enemy turret clears it, the wave pushes back towards you. This sets up a freeze near your turret.
- How to set it up: Shove a wave into the enemy turret when there’s a new wave about to arrive from their base. The tower will kill the minions quickly, and the enemy wave will naturally push back towards you.
- Why use it: It’s a good way to set up a freeze near your turret after pushing the wave in. You can recall safely, and by the time you return, the wave will be near your side of the lane.
2. Zoning
Zoning is positioning yourself in a way that prevents your opponent from farming minions safely. This typically happens when the wave is frozen near your turret and your opponent has to overextend to farm.
- How to zone: Stand between the enemy laner and their minions, threatening to engage if they try to last-hit. Use your presence to deny them farm and experience.
- When to zone: This is especially effective when you are ahead, and the enemy laner has no tools to safely approach the wave.
3. Crash Timing
Wave crashing refers to pushing a large minion wave into the enemy tower. Doing so can force your opponent to miss minions, and it also allows you to leave lane for roaming, warding, or recalling.
- When to crash:
- When you're about to recall.
- If the enemy jungler is pathing away from your lane, allowing you to safely push.
- To deny the enemy farm by making them deal with a large wave under their turret.
4. Wave Management in Specific Scenarios
When You’re Ahead:
- Freeze the wave near your tower to force the enemy to overextend, creating opportunities for your jungler to gank or for you to all-in.
- Slow push and build a massive wave to dive the enemy under their turret with your jungler or support.
When You’re Behind:
- Freeze the wave near your tower to farm safely without overextending.
- If you have to recall and don’t want to lose much farm, fast push the wave into the enemy turret to reset the wave.
When You Want to Roam:
- Fast push the wave so that the enemy laner has to deal with it, giving you time to roam without losing CS.
- Slow push a wave before roaming, so the wave takes longer to reach the enemy tower, giving you more time.
